Erikas Mališauskas
"Designer turned entrepreneur turned football club co-owner" - overdue chat with Erikas as they continue to scale bootstrapped Kaching Appz and coming around to help Zalgiris, too.
The success of Kaching Appz has been covered quite a bit - how are you allocating your time now with products, projects, investments?
Recently I’ve been trying to delegate as much as possible at Kaching Appz. As a CEO my job now is to create a system that will help us scale from $1M to $10M MRR in the next few years. I’m on it. It’s pretty new to me as I’m used to delivering everything I can myself (as an indie hacker) but it also leaves me more time for other stuff which is nice. In the last 30 days my involvement was 30% Kaching Appz, 65% FK Žalgiris, and 5% other investments.
Tells us more how you got involved with Zalgiris and your plans?
I have been a fan for 20 years (even an ultra for some time). Last season, the situation at the club hit rock bottom. Some fans reached out to me, said the club was in huge debt, and asked if I could provide a zero-interest loan to save the club from possible bankruptcy. I sent 100K straight away. At the same time I was talking with Tadas Burgaila about the possibility of buying out the club. It turned out he was already in talks. Long story short, he (together with Kilo) became a major shareholder and invited me to join. There’s still some paperwork going on but I’m getting 25% of the holding company controlling FK Žalgiris. I really want to bring the football culture back to Vilnius and hope to see us play in a full stadium all the time. I’m helping with all I can but my main responsibilities currently are merchandising and mobile app.
AI has put product building on steroids. Which less obvious themes, niches excite you most?
Fashion. Maybe it’s living in Paris, maybe it’s my girlfriend working in fashion, maybe it’s my design background or working with FK Žalgiris merch but lately it has gotten my interest. My friend, a fashion journalist once said that you may not care about fashion at all but every morning you get up and dress. You’re always expressing yourself with clothing whether intentionally or not. Super interesting.
How is running culture in Paris different?
I’m not a social runner, 99% of my runs I run alone. The only thing that still amazes me and I can’t get used to while running in Paris is the scenery. I’m always running along the Seine river so I’m getting the full pack: Notre Dame, Hotel de Ville, Louvre, Grand Palais, Eiffel tower, Musee d’Orsay…
